R e m a r k a b l e W o m e n While we worry about gas prices and oil
shortages, local folk singer and songwriter
May Erlewine reminds us that oil is not the
only resource being threatened: Though we
live amidst the nations single-largest supply
of fresh water, those waters may not always
be clean. Both on and off stage, the performer is an
activist for environmental and community
change. We kind of do a ridiculous amount
of benefits, says Erlewine of herself and her
stage (and life) partner, Seth Bernard.
Erlewine spends her time and resources
educating audiences on how best to keep
the Midwest and Michigan in particular
a safe and habitable place where commu-
nities can thrive. Erlewine is involved with non-profit organi-
zation Save the Wild UP, fighting to keep
harmful sulfide mining to a minimum in The
Upper Peninsula. New plans are underway
for drilling a nickel and copper mining site in
Marquette County, near the Yellow Dog
River. There arent many places left that are
untouched and pure we felt really strong
about protecting it while it is still there. Erlewine shares this passion with a network of
eco-conscious artists and performers.
Earthwork Collective is a group of
concerned musicians and artists from across
Michigan who strive to keep our landscape,
rivers, lakes and streams habitable. Its
amazing to be so closely involved with so
many talented musicians we all really just
inspire and support each other. Though Erlewine has played guitar since she
was 11, it wasnt until she found there was a
very supportive community of musicians in
Michigan that she began to pursue it as a
career. In 2003 when Erlewine performed at
the Ann Arbor Folk Festival, she noticed
someone borrowing instruments for a
performance because his had been stolen.
This show of support inspired her to make a
life of music for herself. That moment I
realized I can really do this for a living if I
want to I realized there was this amazing
community in Michigan musically. Cross-country road trips let Erlewine see up
close the diversity and beauty of Americas
land and people. Not only did she find the
great beauty of our landscape, but an even
greater desire to preserve and protect it. Speaking of her involvement in Earthwork
Collective, Erlewine said: We are all trying to
lead our lives and have the life of music that
is sustainable. That means more than just
making money or being famous, but actually
