www.gibsonhospital.org $6,000,000 Hospital Addition Underway New Emergency Department & Radiology Services G ibson Area Hospital & Health Services (GAHHS) broke ground on September 8, 2005 for its new addition that will house a new emergency department and in-house radiology services. The two-story addition will include 10,000 square feet devoted to the new emergency department, relocation of the CT scanner and installation of a new in- house MRI machine. The hospital board identied the emergency department as our number one replacement need, stated Gary Petersen, GAHHS CEO. We feel that this addition is signicant when one considers that GAHHS provides the only emergency healthcare access in a 30-mile radius and is the areas sole resource to handle bioterrorism or hazardous materials accidents or attacks. The addition will expand to the west of the existing facility and will also include a consolidated central sterile area adjoining the OR. The new emergency department entrance will be located on the west side of the new construction and will feature an overhead canopy. This project is planned to be completed in the summer of 2006, stated Petersen. We want all of our patients to know that we expect little or no disruption of hospital services throughout the building stages. 2 Care you trust, people you know Fore the Hospital Golf Outing Raises $20,000 Hospital Begins Celiac Support Group D id you know that celiac affects 1 out of 33 people? Celiac affects children, as well as adults. Yet 97% of people with celiac disease go undiagnosed. Celiac Disease is one of the most common genetic conditions in the world. Celiac is a digestive disease that is caused by an immune response to a protein called gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, barley, and oats. Celiac disease damages the lining of the small intestine and interferes with the absorption of nutrients from food. Due to a community request, Gibson Area Hospital started a celiac support group that meets every third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at the hospital. The 60 minute meetings are devoted to sharing ideas, recipes, tips and tricks of working and living with a gluten free lifestyle. There is no cost to attend the class. For a person to be told he or she cant eat bread, noodles, mufns, cakes, cookies, pie, gravy, pizza or other processed food it is a lifestyle challenge, explained Kathy Bingham, GAHHS Director of Clinical Nutrition Services. In social settings, its an awkward feeling to turn food down because it doesnt work with your body and overall health. Most people have never heard of a gluten allergy so peer reactions can vary in responses to the refusal of food. Shopping becomes difcult as our society evolves around wheat. The gluten free products are expensive thus adding further stress to the person. The overall goal of the group is to be a stream of information while providing a network of social support. I encourage anyone who has contact with a celiac person to come learn and gain a better understanding in dealing with this signicant lifestyle change, said Bingham. There is no pre-registration for the group. For more information about the support group, please contact Bingham at 217-784-2630. T he Gibson Area Hospital (GAH) Foundation raised over $20,000 during its 16th annual golf outing and fundraiser on July 14, 2005 at Railside Golf Club in Gibson City. Over 200 golfers and hospital supporters participated in the event. The golf outing and fundraiser was sponsored by the GAH Foundation and MCS Ofce Technologies, Inc. During the outing, Ron Probus won the longest putt contest, Mark Lefkowitz received the trophy for the longest drive, Eric Tjarks was awarded the closest to the pin trophy and Jeff James won the putting contest. I would like to thank all of our generous sponsors, supporters and volunteers who helped make this fundraiser a true success, said Jill Arends, GAH Foundation Director. The Gibson Area Hospital Auxiliary and Smile Greeters spend numerous hours volunteering for the hospital. If you are a person who has a couple of hours a week or even a couple of hours a month, volunteering at the hospital may be an option for you. GAH Auxiliary Since 1952, the GAH Auxiliary has been active in volunteering their time and efforts to GAH. The Auxiliarys mission is to serve GAHHS through raising funds and volunteering. Over 200 men and women from the Hospital service territory are currently Auxiliary members. The GAH Auxiliary offers many volunteer opportunities for individuals. Their volunteer time consists of activities such as managing the hospital gift shop, serving juice and snacks to families of patients, providing hospital tours for grade school students, baking birthday cakes for residents in the Annex, planting the garden in the Annex, taking part in the safe sitters courses and working the information desk. In addition, the Auxiliary has raised thousands of dollars which is given directly back to the hospital. Carol Hutchcraft has been a volunteer with the Auxiliary for 10 years and volunteers at the information desk one time per month. I think the Auxiliary is a great way to help the hospital and I am really glad that we have a hospital as strong as this to serve our community, said Hutchcraft. It doesnt take a lot of time to volunteer and when I do, I truly feel that I am helping the hospital. If you are interested in joining the Auxiliary, please contact the hospital at 217-784-2602. Smile Greeters When you walk into the main lobby at GAH, you will be greeted by one of the newest volunteer groups, the Smile Greeters. The Smile Greeters group formed while the hospital was under construction. The greeters helped patients nd their way around during this time. The Smile Greeters were a great addition to the hospital so when the construction was completed, the Smile Greeters continued to do their job. Ted Swanson, the founder of the Smile Greeters, explained that being a Smile Greeter is one of the best jobs. I love this job because I get to smile and greet people when they come in the door. I help people nd their way and answer questions they may have, said Swanson. I enjoy people and I like this hospital, so this is one way I can give back to the hospital. Smile Greeters volunteer one day per month for approximately four hours. If you are interested in nding out more about the smile greeter program or would like to volunteer, please contact Ted Swanson at 217-784-5268. GAH Volunteer Opportunities One morning a week, Don and Janet Jensen volunteer as couriers between the hospital, doctors offices, nursing homes, ambulance service and public health in Gibson City and Paxton. In 2004, Janet won the hospitals Volunteer of the Year Award for volunteering 485 hours. Ted Swanson talks with patients in the lobby while volunteering as a Smile Greeter. Why Volunteer? V olunteering has many pluses for seniors. Its a way of giving back and of feeling like a contributing member of society. It also provides a social context and structure after retirement, yet with a schedule thats exible and of your own making. Volunteers connect with fellow volunteers as well as those they serve. Plus its a meaningful use of time that can afford the opportunity to deeply affect those who are served, the community or the environment. One study found that persons who volunteer are healthier and happier than those who dont. (Source: Lillian Hawthorne, Finishing Touches, Senior Volunteers, Elder Books, Forest Knolls, CA) Tim Schmidt Director of Materials Management Tim Schmidt was named the Director of Materials Management after the retirement of Tom Hartford. Tim brings over 32 years of hospital material management experience to Gibson Area Hospital. Previously, Tim worked as the Director of Materials Management at Memorial Medical Center and BroMenn Regional Medical Center. I look forward to coming to work and I want to make a difference, stated Tim. I have only been here for a short time but everyone has already made me feel like part of the hospital family. Tim and his wife, Kristine, live in Bloomington and have three sons, Todd, Lucas and Tony. They also have three grandchildren. In Tims spare time, he enjoys golng and bike riding. 5 Care you trust, people you know Brian Anderson Food Service Director Brian Anderson joins the Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services (GAHHS) staff as the Food Service Director. Brian has 25 years of food service experience in the hospital and restaurant setting. My goal is to continue to provide high quality food for the cafeteria and hospital patients, stated Brian. I look forward to using my (food service) experience to implement new ideas and changes. Brian grew up in Colfax and currently lives there with his wife, Shelly, and their two children, Tara and Nick. In his spare time, Brian enjoys shing and camping. Everyone at the hospital has been really friendly, Brian said. This job has been very rewarding so far and people are so appreciative of things I do. I look forward to working at the hospital and continuing my career. Care you trust, people you know. (For Annex Sunroom)
F or the second year, the Annex, Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services (GAHHS) long-term care unit, received the highest ranking possible from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) for nursing homes in Illinois. The Annex met or exceeded over 150 regulatory standards regulated by IDPH and The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). A small percentage of Illinois nursing homes receive this exemplary ranking. Syndey Bourne, Annex LPN, explained that to receive these high ratings it takes a lot of work and a lot of outstanding care. We have a staff and administration that takes the time to talk with each resident and we all know the residents specic needs. The high quality of care we provide is expected and nothing less will be tolerated, explained Bourne. I feel we have the best group of nurses aids and an administrator and director of nurses who are involved and really care about the staff and residents. Each year, the IDPH conducts a survey of every nursing home in Illinois. During the survey, the IDPH inspection team looks at all Long-Term Care Unit Receives

regulatory standards including: total resident care, staff/resident interaction, environment, re safety, food safety and preparation, care practices, maintenance, medication disbursement, housekeeping, and clinical records. We have a team atmosphere and all hospital departments work as a team to take care of the residents, stated Sheryl Steinlicht, Annex LPN. Our teamwork is what allows us to score as high as we did on the survey. The team also interviews caregivers, administrative staff and a sample of residents and family members about their life within the nursing home. The inspection team consists of trained inspectors, including at least one registered nurse. The Annex is 42-bed long- term care unit, which is attached to the Gibson Area Hospital. The Annex offers respite care, 24-hour licensed nursing care, skilled nursing care, medication and nutrition management, and Alzheimers/dementia care. Non-Profit Org. U.S. Postage PAID Decatur, IL Permit No. 180 Care you trust, people you know 1120 N. Melvin PO Box 429 Gibson City, IL 60936-0429 www.gibsonhospital.org Y ou may have noticed in the last several years, that the healthcare industry has stressed the importance of consumers becoming more aware of the quality of services provided by hospitals, physicians, nursing homes and home care agencies. Several agencies, both private and governmental, have developed quality measures for hospitals to institute, monitor and report the results. This article is meant to give you the tools needed to nd information about our facility to see how well we are doing when compared to the rest of the state and nation. You will notice, as you visit these websites, that our facility has done as well as, if not better than, other institutes we are compared to. It is also important to understand that, as a small rural hospital, we are not required to participate in these quality measures since our total number of cases in certain categories may not be sufcient for a statistically valid sample. We have chosen to do so voluntarily. Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) is the nations leading standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. They are focused on improving the quality and safety of care provided by health care organizations. This is one source of accreditation and comparison information that a person can use to determine whether a health care organization will meet their needs. The website address is www. qualitycheck.org. The Quality Reports will provide information on a health care organizations: Joint Commission accreditation decision and the effective dates of the accreditation award. Programs accredited by the Joint Commission, and programs or services accredited by other accrediting bodies. Compliance with the Joint Commissions National Patient Safety Goals, as applicable to the organization, and performance on National Quality Improvement Goals (hospitals only). National Quality Improvement Goals allow hospitals to report on the key indicators of quality of care in up to four treatment areas: heart attack, heart failure, community acquired pneumonia, and pregnancy and related conditions. Special quality awards, including recognition such as Disease-Specic Care Certication, Ernest A. Codman Award, Eisenberg Patient Safety Award, Franklin Award, and Magnet status (awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center), and others approved by the Joint Commission Board of Commissioners. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), an agency of the U.S. Quality Measures at GAH Submitted by Julie Bowen, RN - Performance Improvement Coordinator Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has developed a website through efforts with the Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA). The HQA consists of organizations that represent consumers, hospitals, doctors, employers, accrediting organizations, and Federal agencies. The information on this website can be used by any adult needing hospital care. Their website address is www.hospitalcompare. hhs.gov. This information helps you, your health care provider, family, and friends compare the quality of care provided in the acute-care hospitals (general hospitals) and critical access hospitals (small, remote hospitals) that agree to submit data on the quality of certain services they provide for certain conditions. This quality information not only helps you make good decisions about your health care, but also encourages hospitals to improve the quality of health care they provide. The two agencies mentioned above are the top reporters of quality information that we focus on at Gibson Area Hospital and Health Services. There are numerous other private agencies that also provide information related to the quality of healthcare provided throughout the nation. If you have any questions about the information that was provided on these websites, please contact our administration ofce at 217-784-2602.
