Madison, WI training facility by a team
of knowledgeable trainers. Students
emerge from these classes with the
knowledge to tackle almost any issue
they will encounter on todays most pop-
ular laser printer models. While theres no substitute for these hands-on courses, PARTS NOW! now
offers a publication designed to teach the
basics of monochrome laser printer
repair. The publication, Intro to
Monochrome Printer Repair, was
released at the 2004 Imaging Technology
Education and Exposition (ITEX) in February. Steve Geishirt, PARTS NOW! Director of Training and author of the
98-page book, feels it is important for
anyone repairing printers to have a basic
understanding of how they work. A technician who knows what is going on inside of the printer has a fuller
knowledge of what causes errors, which
makes it easier to trouble-shoot them,
Geishirt said. Intro to Monochrome Printer Repair includes sections on laser theo-
ry, paper path, menus and communica-
tions, and trouble-shooting. Geishirt
feels the information is useful for those
new to the industry, or for those wishing SALES SPOTLIGHT: MICHAEL

(continued from page 2) 4 PART SPOTLIGHT: HP LASERJET 9000 DC CONTROLLER The HP LaserJet 9000 is an extremely powerful monochrome laser printer with
the ability to crank out fifty pages per
minute. Its versatility is also an asset, as
an mfp version is available that allows
for a multitude of options. But even a
powerful, versatile printer like the LJ
9000 can have some quirks. If youve spent much time around the LJ 9000, youve probably heard a
thumping noise when it is printing. This
thumping noise results from the fuser
assembly roller staying in one position
long enough to create a flat spot. This
flat spot may create a thumping noise
not only when printing, but also during
the rotation of the rollers inside the
printer. The good news is that this noise
will not affect the performance of the
printerit is only a nuisance. In order to combat this noise, HP has revised the DC controller (part number
RG5-5778) for the LJ 9000 with a tim- ing change. This timing change increases
the rotation of the fuser so the roller
doesnt stay in the same position too
long. Installing this new version DC
controller will eradicate the thumping
noise. If its time to replace your 9000 DC controller, or if you cant put up with the
thumping anymore, call your PARTS
NOW! account representative or log on
to www.partsnow.com and order one today. s PRODUCT Figure 1 - The HP LaserJet 9000 DC
Controller to brush up on their basics. The book is a great training tool for new technicians, Geishirt said. It will
get them up to speed with the processes
and terminology that they will see every-
day in the field. PARTS NOW! Vice President of Marketing and Strategy Jason Jensen
said the book was well received at
ITEX. We had people at our booth telling us how theyve been looking for a tool
like this, Jensen said. This initial
response has been very positive. s INTRO TO MONOCHROME, continued from page 2 This article originally appeared in the October 2003 issue of Image Source
(Volume 6, Issue 10). As a printer technician, have you ever made one of the following statements
when working on a new printer? There has got to be an easier way! I wish someone would have told me this before I started. Its frustrating when you spend hours trying to solve a problem, only to find
out later that there was a simple solution.
This article will save you time on one
such situation you will encounter on the
HP Color LaserJet (CLJ) 2500 or 1500. It all started with a printer displaying an error code that wasnt listed in the
service manual. The printer, an HP CLJ
2500, does not utilize a control panel
like some other printers do. It uses eight
lights to indicate status (Figure 1). These
lights are broken into two groups: supply
status lights and printer status lights. The five supply status lights keep track of the consumables, such as the
four color toner cartridges and the imag-
ing drum. Since this article is about
errors and printer status, we will not talk
about these five lights. Instead we will concentrate on the remaining three lightsthe printer status
lightswhich indicate different errors,
depending on which combination of
lights are on or flashing. These combina-
tions can be interpreted by referencing
the service manual. The HP CLJ 2500
uses the Go, Ready, and Attention
lights (Figure 1). The error we will concentrate on here is a service error where all three lights
are on steady. Because this combination
can mean several things, a secondary TIME SAVING TIPS FOR THE

To obtain the secondary pattern, hold
down the Go and Cancel buttons. In
the case of the unknown error we will be
dealing with, the secondary light pattern
is a steady Ready and Attention
light. This secondary light pattern is not
listed in the service manual. When dealing with an error not listed in the service manual, you can connect
the printer to a computer that has the
proper driver software that includes the
toolbox, which is software located with-
in the driver CD. When the toolbox is
installedusually when drivers are
installedit gives the user the ability to
communicate with the printer. The tool-
box communicates with the user via the
control panel, various troubleshooting
tools and by displaying when there is a
problem with the printer. In this case, the toolbox revealed the error as a T2 clutch error. However, the
service manual doesnt show a T2
clutch. So what now? I suspected that T2
referred to the secondary transfer roller,
which HP confirmed. The T2 clutch is
called CL2 in the service manual. This
clutch engages the secondary transfer
roller cam that lifts and lowers the sec-
ondary transfer roller. Since weve isolated the T2 clutch as the source of the error, it makes sense
that we should replace it. However,
instead of unnecessarily replacing a part,
a quick ohm check of the clutch will show if it has continuity. In this case the
clutch was in the 150 to 200 range, which means it is still good. The next step was to check for volt- age at the DC controller. While looking
up the connector in the wiring diagram to get a voltage reading, I discovered
that someone had attempted to fix this
printer and got the wires crossed. The
red arrows in Figure 2 show two
cableseach with two pinsthat can be
interchanged: J114 (CL2) and J112 (SL
92-MP tray pickup solenoid). Could this
be the problem? It could, so I reco nnect- ed them properly, expecting to see the
error go away. You can imagine my TIME SAVING TIPS, continued from page 5 The leader in printer parts 6 Want to get

known working DC controller and see-
ing the error reappear, I was really frus-
trated. What else could cause this error? After brainstorming with a coworker, I decided to check for a sensor that
would monitor the lifting of the sec-
ondary transfer roller, and found some-
thing interesting. Not only is there a sen-
sor, but after checking the wiring dia-
gram again, I discovered that this sen-
sorthe roller engagement sensorwas
plugged into the wrong connector on the
DC controller. Upon further examina-
tion, the waste toner detection sensor
was connected to the roller engagement
sensor connectoranother case of cables
being hooked up incorrectly. This time,
J108 (waste toner sensor) and J115
(roller engaging sensor)both of which
have three pinswere interchanged.
After properly reconnecting these cables,
the printer worked fine (Figure 2, yellow
arrows). To verify these cables are correctly connected, you need to access the DC
controller of the printer. Heres how: 1. Remove the right side panel by removing one screw (Figure 3). 2. Remove the right rear cover by pressing on one tab at the top
(Figure 4). 3. Remove the formatter by remov- HEADQUARTERS: 3517 W. Beltline Hwy. Madison, WI 53713 (608) 276-8688 (800) 886-6688 FAX (608) 276-9593 FLORIDA OFFICE: 4140 SW 30th Ave. Suite 100 Ft. is often referred to as a dinosaur.
And though it was introduced nearly
ten years agoan eternity as far as
laser printer technology goesthe
4V is still something you will see if
you work on a lot of HP printers. In
fact, just the other day I was asked
by our technical support department
to look into an issue regarding this
printer. In this case, the part in question was the paper guide plate assem-
blyotherwise known as the multi-
purpose tray (MPT) feed guide plate
assembly (part number RG5-2248).
This part is the assembly that sits
under the fuser and holds both the
transfer roller and MPT pickup roller
(Figure 1). It also contains the sensor
and flag to detect media in the MPT.
A spring is attached to the sensor
flag to provide the right amount of tension so the flag rests in the appropriate
position (Figure 2). If this spring is absent when the paper guide plate assembly is installed, the printer will detect the presence of media in the MPT, regardless of whether there
is actually paper in the MPT. This causes a problem if the printer is configured to
pick from the MPT first, because the MPT pickup roller will rotate and cause a
13 paper jam error when paper does not clear the first media sensor. The problem with this spring is that it is very fragile and will fall off during TECH TIP OF THE MONTH HP LASERJET 4V PAPER GUIDE PLATE ASSEMBLY SPRING BY STEPHANIE HINZ
